John Payne is co-chair of Interaction 17, founder and Managing Director at Moment, a digital strategy and design consultancy with offices in New York and Chicago. Moment’s clients include Capital One, Bloomberg, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, The Weather Channel and Johnson & Johnson. John’s current work explores the positive contribution that a systems-oriented approach to empathy can make to complex healthcare experiences, with a focus on patient empowerment and participation in management of chronic disease.
He is a past co-chair and current advisor to the Ethnographic Praxis in Industry Conference (EPIC) and sits on the board of Public Policy Lab, a non-profit service design consultancy dedicated to creating more helpful public services for low-income and disadvantaged Americans.
Educated at Auburn University and the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, John leads learning initiatives at Moment and has created and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in design methods at Parsons New School for Design and NYU. When he is not consulting, volunteering, or teaching, he spends his time with his family in Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore, MD; and Asheville, NC.
