To create better products, we need to understand people better, not just as users but as people centered in their own lives, memories and communities. This workshop will use practical examples from the UK’s award-winning Urban Sustainable Development Lab to show how anyone can work inclusively to explore how their novel products connect with people’s familiar knowledge in the contexts of their lives, places, and friendships. The majority of the workshop will be group exercises and discussions: prototyping and testing to maximize the time spent together on understanding how new ideas can create value in real life projects. Ideas from Indigenous Research Techniques and Humble Inquiry will be used to show how the dynamics of usability workshops can be changed to build more meaningful products that people want to use.
