Designing for Social Change: The New Principles for Design

February 8, 2017 1:00 PM - 1:45 PM

As today’s world faces massive disparities in access to healthcare, education, and critical financial services, we are challenged to go beyond designing products and services to improve the lives of users. We should be called, instead, to make change for societies as a whole. To design for social change.

Designing for social change requires us to design differently. While most would agree that both systems and human-centered thinking are required to make change, what hasn’t been offered is the necessary interplay between both. How do we solve for the individual and the system in which they reside, using the tools and methods we know as designers?

This talk will offer a set of new principles for design that are necessary for the effective design of any human experience that strives for positive social change. Using three diverse examples which include a micro insurance product for the poor, an obesity-prevention service, and the Black Lives Matter campaign as case studies, we’ll demonstrate the principles of designing for social change in action.
